Mussels peak from September to April.
According to the traditional rule of only eating shellfish during months containing the letter R, mussels are at their best when the water is colder. During this time, the meat is plump, sweet, and at its highest quality. Mussels are one of the most sustainable seafood choices available; as filter feeders, they actually help clean the water around them and require no supplemental feed, making rope-grown varieties an excellent option for the environmentally conscious shopper.
